My child is Having Constipation Problems. What Should I Do?

Definition of constipation

Dry and hard stool that is difficult to expel. However if the child only defecates once every 2-3 days and the stool is soft then it is not constipation and the mother needs not worry.

Possible reasons for constipation

There are many reasons as to why constipation occurs, but usually constipation and the use of milk formulas are not directly related. Here are the common reasons why constipation occurs:

  1. The child consumes a small amount of milk and has good absorption. The accumulated stool in the intestines is kept longer and becomes harder. This results in constipation.
  2. Lack of water consumption.
  3. Lack of fiber intake.
  4. The milk is too diluted. There are specific ways to mix child formulas. Follow the instructions given.
  5. Too much vitamins, iron, calcium supplements, and others additives, which may also cause constipation.

How to treat constipation

  1. Increase the intake of food and water or give a small amount of glucose water to the child.
  2. Let the child drink some fruit juice (but not apple juice) or eat fruits that are rich in fiber.
  3. One hour after milk, give the child a massage in a clockwise direction on the left abdomen. This helps with the child’s peristalsis.
  4. Seek medical treatment for the child.
